Snacktizing Math

Help me give my students juice and snacks for the motivation to keep going even though they may struggle with math and want to give up.

My Project

My project request for this year is geared towards increasing student engagement. Many of my students struggle with math. So, this year I would like to build in a more hands-on learning approach to solving geometric problems.

I requested a book on hands-on learning with geometry that includes various activities for students to use to learn using their hands instead of practicing problems in a notebook.

My students are amazing when they put their minds to it. Many of them have not had much success in math, and they tell themselves they are not good at math, so why bother?

I try to utilize the PBIS incentive program to provide students with the opportunity to earn points each day. At the end of the week, they can go shopping for a special treat or drink. Teenagers step up their game when they know food is involved. Many of them also come from low income households, so providing them with an opportunity to purchase snacks with just points allows them to pay for snacks they don't have the cash for.

You would be surprised by how many of my students hang back and ask for something because they are so hungry. Stockpiling the cabinet at the beginning of the school year allows me to begin day one with rules and expectations that will be rewarded if followed. Otherwise, I purchase products here and there when my funds allow.

I went through about a box a day of tissues last year. I could only purchase tissues here and there. I'd like to keep the kids in the room if possible. By providing me with a supply of tissues, I can offer the tissue in the classroom instead of students leaving to go to the restroom and missing out on valuable instruction time.
