Snacks, Water and Games to Motivate Students During Mentoring

Help me give my students snacks, water, and games for their mentoring period so that they are able to focus better during the day and are able to get to know each other through team-building.

My Students

My students are between the ages of 16 and 24 and have many different reasons why they attend the school. As an ELL and English 1 and English 2 teacher, I work with students who are brand new to the country as well as students who have had some amount of time away from learning as a result of various obstacles. Some students have been living in D.C. their entire lives, while some have lived in D.C. for only a few months.

Regardless of the differences in student background, the students are motivated to learn and to graduate in order to start the next chapter of their lives.

They are hard-working and perseverant in school and out of school.

My Project

At our High School, students have a 40-minute mentoring period during the day. This is a time when teachers and staff work to build relationships with the students and build trust so that we can all work together throughout the year. This is also a time when teachers help with academics, social-emotional skills, and community building. During this period, students can have snacks, chat with each other, and play educational games in order to get to know each other.

With this project, students will be able to get to know each other through the team-building that comes from the interactive and educational games.

I chose games that the students have requested for the mentoring time: Uno, Jenga, Chess, and others; these are games that all require teams or more than two players so that the students are encouraged to interact with each other. I have also asked for 10 cases of bottles of water for students to drink and healthy snacks like crackers and granola bars for the students to eat during the session. Students will also be able to focus more during the day with the snacks and the bottles of water, because of the fact that many students do not eat breakfast or eat anything until around 2:30 p.m. every day.
