Students attend our school due to extreme behavior, which makes it difficult for them to attend their home base school. Students struggle regulating their own emotions and need to be taught appropriate techniques how to handle their emotions.
The majority of our students have faced some kind of traumatic event in their young lives that results in some of the behaviors.
As a class, we work with behavior interventions to help students be able to transition back to their home base school with supports in place.
My Project
Due to budget cuts last year, they extended our school day an extra 30 minutes. And school begins 10 minutes earlier with a start time of 6:40. Students unload from buses at 6:30 a.m. With our long day, students go a long time without a snack once they eat lunch. Our students qualify for free and reduced meals. Some qualify for food bags on the weekend and over long breaks due to financial difficulty. Because of this, parents cannot contribute for snacks to the classroom.
Students need snacks to ensure that their basic needs are met.
Once their basic needs are met then they are ready to learn.
Students are able to work more when they are not hungry. I would like to be able to give my students an afternoon and morning snack to help them stay on track learning in the classroom.
