I teach mathematics at a public school. The majority of my students live in an economically disadvantaged Latino community. Most of them qualify for the federal free meal program. During the pandemic, I have seen the majority of them working harder than before since they also have taken new roles helping their parents at home.
Observing my students persevering at solving problems rather than easily giving up motivates me to do my best.
Although the pandemic forced everyone to lose instructional hours, I can see in most of my students a willingness to catch up to recover what was missed.
Funding for this project will provide snacks for my students, and it will help them focus on instruction rather than their empty stomach.
I see many of my students staying after school involved in extra curricular activities and asking for assistance to complete assignments. The majority of them are exhausted and hungry, but they stay anyways because they have the willingness to get things done.
Although I cannot always prepare sandwiches for them, my project will allow my students to have a snack, get some energy, and smile as they persevere in completing their assignments during my after school tutoring.
I have noticed the pattern that students focus a bit more after having a snack while doing academic work.
