Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at Hillcrest face a variety of social and economic struggles every day. Currently, over 85% of students receive free or reduced-price lunches and many families need further resources to help their families thrive. A large proportion of families identify as low income, as well as homeless, and reach out to the school to assist with help accessing community resources such as food, clothing, housing, transportation and medical care.
At Hillcrest, we strive to meet the needs of the whole child.
We believe that unless children feel safe and receive the basic needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter, they are unable to learn and access the school curriculum to their greatest potential. It is reported that 13 million children in the U.S come to school hungry each day. This is the case for many of the children at our school. In fact, for too many, the food provided at school is the majority of their food intake for the day. We know that when kids are hungry, their ability to learn and take in new information becomes greatly impacted. As a result, our special education team is reaching out for food donations so we can ensure all of the kids we teach have full bellies so they can feel their best!
My Project
Every day, students come to school hungry. In fact, for many of our students, the majority of the food that they are eating daily is what is provided to them at school. At our school we are able to provide free or reduced price breakfast and lunch options. However, as our kids are growing and learning, they require more.
As a result, our special education team is looking to supply children with healthy snacks during their small group learning sessions.
We need cereal bars, goldfish, animal crackers and pretzels.
We know our students are capable of great things. By providing basic essentials such as a safe classroom, loving teachers and healthy snacks, we know we can help each and every student grow to their fullest potential. When we eat good food, we feel good, and when we feel good we learn best!
