Snacks to Fuel Our Minds and Bellies

My Project

Our school is a Title I elementary school located in a city neighborhood with low socioeconomic status. We have a very diverse group, with African Americans making up the majority. More than 80% of students eat lunch for free or at a reduced cost. Being an AVID school, our goal is for our students to be lifelong learners who will attend college. My students are outstanding, eager to learn, vibrant and young.

For my fifth graders, I'm requesting snacks.

Since they can never eat enough in one meal to keep their stomachs satisfied, my students are frequently asking for something more. Throughout the day, they should be able to have a snack every three to four hours.

Snacking frequently during the day breaks the cycle of emotional or boredom eating. For children to be energized and concentrate on their schoolwork, they must be able to recharge throughout the day. My students consistently want me to bring snacks to the classroom, when I ask them what they would like me to bring, they mention snacks like, Cheez-its, Slim Jims, chips, and even pop tarts.
