Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a low-income, highly diverse neighborhood. Our school population is primarily composed of ethnically diverse students who are recipients of free and reduced price lunch. We are a Title I focus school that has a large population of ESL and ELL (English Language Learners) students who come from Spanish-speaking backgrounds. Most of my students face adversity in some fashion. However, they remain resilient, eager, and consistently take pride in their academic work. Our school community promotes a safe, caring, and rigorous learning environment.
My Project
Each day, my kindergarteners each lunch at 11am. By 2pm, my students are hungry and in need of a snack! Our school provides snack 2 to 3 times per week, but the other 2-3 days, we are on our own! We need more snacks!
My students have a very difficult time learning and thinking critically when their stomachs are growling and empty.
These snacks are absolutely vital to my students' productivity and success during the second half of the school day. We will enjoy our fruit snacks, fruit leather (my students' favorite), and others in the afternoon to give us the extra push to successfully finish our school day! Also, these snacks will at times be sent home with some students who do not have ample amounts of food at home.
My classroom is also in dire need of tissues and Clorox wipes. This time of year we are going through a box of tissues almost every day! We need tissues to keep our noses clean and wipes to keep our room clean so that we can get busy learning and creating!
