Snacks to Fuel Our Brains and Body in First Grade!

My Project

I am a teacher of special needs students for first grade in a low-income/high poverty Title I school in Delaware. My students are faced with many challenges on a daily basis in and out of school. They come to school to work hard in an environment that embraces their learning challenges and helps them succeed.

Throughout the day, I teach my students to become independent thinkers who will do the right thing in challenging situations and persevere through difficulties.

My students support one another, creating an inviting learning community where they feel comfortable taking risks.

This year my first graders have a very early lunch; they eat at 10:30 am. Our school day doesn't end until 3:00 pm. This means they still have more than 4 hours of learning before they go home. Studies show that children should have a nutritious mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack at school to meet the nutrient demands of their growing bodies and brains. Students who snack on healthy foods, such as crackers, pretzels, and popcorn - perform better in school. My project will help my students' bodies and minds, and improve learning by providing my classroom nutritious snacks to eat mid-afternoon.
