Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, resources are limited, especially for the special education program. I teach 1st and 4th grade students with a variety of learning and emotional disabilities. Most of my students have a second disability due to ADHD and ADD. Although my students face many challenges on a daily basis that does not stop them from being happy and eager to learn. I have a variety of personalities in my classroom but at the end of the day they all come together as a family.
My students face many challenges in and out of the classroom, and how are they supposed to learn when their basic needs are not being met?
I have 20 amazing students who continue to make progress on a daily basis. My students could make even more progress to close the achievement gap if they had access to more resources to support their diverse needs.
My Project
Help support our class with a variety of snacks to help keep their busy bodies fueled throughout their busy day. My students work long and hard hours on a daily basis and get hungry by the time they finally get ready to go home. Many of my students do not make it to school on time to have breakfast so they go through their day hungry until lunchtime. A lot of my students also love to work hard for an incentive of a snack. Many times they want to be shown that they are appreciated by a simple gesture of a yummy, little treat.
