My Students

How well do you work when your stomach is grumbling? Doing high quality work when you're hungry is not an easy task, but it's what many of my students go through every day. Add in that they work in school in a foreign language, English, and it's an even greater challenge.

My students are all recent immigrants and English Language Learners (ELLs).

They have traveled over continents and oceans, uprooting their entire lives so they can have a chance at a great education and unlimited opportunity. Starting over in a new country for them often means living sparingly, with tight budgets and no money for luxuries like snacks to get them through the time between meals. More than 90% of my students receive free or reduced price breakfasts and lunches because their families do not have the means to put meals on the table. Add to this that all of their classes are in a new language - English - and their energy reserves can dip pretty low. They can be pretty spent by 11:00 or 2:30. The glazed-over hungry look comes on around those times and can derail an otherwise productive day.

My Project

I am requesting breakfast staples and snacks. These snacks will be a quick break that will help students pause, refuel, and then take on the next challenge. I want to make sure that of the limited time I get to see them everyday, as many minutes as possible are productive. When I see that a student is slowing down, I want to be able to open up a drawer and hand them some quick, sensible calories that will get them working again. When a group is having trouble getting their heads together to collaborate on a project, what diffuses the tension could be as simple as sharing a bag of trail mix. Once they've taken the time to share some food, they can get back on track. Same goes for enticing students to stay for clubs and homework help after-school, and sometimes for families at events like project exhibitions and workshops.

My students are capable of amazing thoughtfulness and creativity when they have the right resources.

Nutritious snacks to get through the day are a luxury most of us take for granted. My students deserve the same. Please help us keep these young, active minds sharp with some snacks!
