My Project

The students in my classroom are amazing. They know many languages and English is not their first one. On top of the normal struggles of school, many of these students are trying to translate what their teacher says into another language and then back into English. However, they come to school and give their best effort every day.

Along with having to use brain power to try to translate what teachers are saying, they often are lacking other basic needs like clean clothes and even regular meals.

You would think that they would complain all the time, but they do not. They are grateful for everything they have. Our school emphasizes the positives around us, takes the time to get to know the individuals we work with daily, and provide scaffolds to ensure student success.

Can you focus on anything else when you are so hungry that your stomach is grumbling and stinging? Of course not. Neither can kids. The variety of snacks will be given to students if they can't focus because they are so hungry all they can focus on is that. It is amazing how a simple thing like a snack turns a student around and allows them to get back on task and do their work. Your brain can not absorb information if you are too hungry. Feed your stomach, feed your brain.
