Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second graders are from a vibrant, diverse community in Oakland, and most of them speak a language other than English at home. Many of them are newcomers from across the globe, including countries such as Guatemala, Mexico, and Yemen. They bring a diverse range of experiences and cultures to our classroom and make the classroom community a very special place. These students are curious, hardworking, and determined to succeed.
Most of my students live in low-income households, and some are experiencing homelessness or unstable housing situations.
That said, they show great motivation and resilience each and every day. Together, our families and our school are committed to giving all students an equal opportunity to attend college and pursue their dreams. With district budget cuts and limited school funds, it can be difficult to provide all students with the high-quality materials and supplies they need and deserve in order to get the most out of school. This is where you come in!
My Project
Before my second graders can get down to business solving math problems, writing stories, and diving into their favorite books, they need to have their basic needs met. All of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch at our school, but our day is long and they often experience feelings of hunger throughout the day.
It is important to me to have nutritious snacks on hand so that students' bellies stay full and hunger doesn't get in the way of their important learning.
Some of our families do not have the means to send their children to school with snacks, so I like to have snacks on hand for all students, especially those whom I know are experiencing homelessness or food insecurity. Some students take extra snacks home with them as well. It means a lot to these second graders to know that the classroom is a place where they can get food whenever they need it.
The snacks funded by this project are kid-friendly but also nutritious, offering a quick dose of protein, whole grains, or vitamin c. As a teacher, my number one goal is to provide a safe, happy, and healthy environment for my students. These vital supplies will help me care for my students and ensure that their basic needs are met. Then, we can get on to the learning!
