Data surrounds us every day, so it is important that students are able to analyze data to make informed decisions. I want to engage students in all stages of statistical reasoning where they collect, analyze and describe data sets. These explorations will add context to the formulas and vocabulary in the unit, making learning more meaningful.
Using fruit snacks and M&M candies as data points will capture students' attention and make learning statistics enjoyable.
Students will count the fruit snacks to examine measures of central tendency such as mean, median, and mode for each brand. They will then consider the margin of error in the packaging based on the weight of the contents. Using M&M candies, students will examine sampling populations. Each group will be given 100 candies to determine the composition of a population. They will then collect samples of the population using various strategies. Those strategies will be paired with the formal vocabulary to help students make sense of how to collect representative samples. During each activity, students will also create graphical displays to supplement their statistical calculations and explain their findings.
