Three years ago, I added a snack bin to my classroom. Kids could take food as they needed it, but the focus was on need. I don't want my kids to have food insecurity, so I want it available if they get hungry.
I have many kids who stay for after-school sports and clubs, and they like to grab snacks to help them sustain the energy they need to play after school.
I try to have healthy food options so they understand the importance of nutrition and making good choices. I also use a currency in my classroom that they can use to purchase other options to learn financial literacy skills as well. The candies are used for that throughout the school year.
My kids seemed to do better when I had items available. All the snacks are for my bin/store. These have been my kids' favorite snack items. We had to talk about wants versus needs with middle schoolers since I teach over 100 kids daily. I also use the candy for my Fitzhugh store. They use Fitzhugh bucks to purchase much-loved treats as well. The storage containers are for some more options, and all are used for my snack/store! I try to keep snacks available daily, but I must get help. The drink items are for our kindness cart, which is used throughout the school. Kindness is spread to many throughout the year and helps with after-school hours for clubs. The printer ink is for our classroom materials that are printed on the fly when needed. Thank you for helping me sustain a snack basket that helps with their nutrition during the school year.
