Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students often don't eat breakfast before school. Many of my second graders come to class hungry and can't wait to eat until lunch. I have been supplementing with snacks but with 24 hungry students, it is just too much for me to afford weekly snacks.
School lunches have often been reduced due to Covid food supply shortages leaving students hungry by the end of the day.
Many days students are given a cup of water and a Lunchable with fruit. This is just not enough to fill their bellies for an entire school day. Snacks help students through tedious concepts and even make learning fun by using food as a hands-on prop used in learning. We use snacks to create geographic models with the land being the graham crackers and the vanilla wafers as islands. It is so much fun to watch students create landmasses and enjoy eating their creations when they are finished!
