Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I middle school in Austin, TX. All of my students are considered economically disadvantaged. They face a range of other challenges every single day. The majority of the students I work with have a variety of learning disabilities, ADHD, emotional disturbance or have experienced trauma in their lives. My students are kind, hard-working, and amazing. They make me proud every day.
I set high expectations for my students, and I am constantly amazed by their efforts despite the many challenges they face.
My students continue to help me grow into a better educator and inspire me every day.
My Project
My students need healthy snacks to provide them with energy to get through the school day. One of the first things I learned in my first year teaching is that if a student is hungry, school work becomes even more difficult.
Although my students face many challenges, hunger should not be something a 13-year-old needs to worry about.
My students know they can come to my room at any time and ask for a snack. By providing snacks to my students, I have seen a tremendous increase in their effort and in the quality of their work. Many quality relationships have been built in my classroom while eating snacks. Full stomachs have helped many students, who struggle to focus and pay attention in school, to be successful throughout the day!
Slim Jims, Quaker Granola Bars, and Pepperidge Farm Goldfish are some of their favorites! These snacks will go directly to my 7th and 8th-grade students and help them to stay full, healthy, and focused throughout the day. I will be able to give students snacks during the day, at after-school tutoring, and to take home.
