This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Throughout the school day, our special education students often get hungry. Many of them face food scarcity at home and rely on the food they get at school to meet their needs. Our school provides them with breakfast and lunch, but we find that our students often get hungry between breakfast and lunch and between lunch and the end of the school day.

When students have snacks available, they are more focused and motivated to learn.

Having snacks readily available is also a trauma informed practice because students who have dealt with food scarcity feel safe when they know they have food to eat. This helps decrease challenging behavior in students, which makes it easier for everyone to learn. We plan to offer healthy snacks, such as the goldfish and fruit leather, at regular intervals, while the less healthy snacks, like peanut butter M&Ms, can be used as reinforcement in student behavior intervention plans.
