My students need snacks like Goldfish, fruit snacks, and granola bars for the midmorning recess so they can focus during class and be energized for the rest of our day.
Many of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and face many challenges on a daily basis. Most are from single parent homes or are immigrants who have just arrived here in the U.S. and speak little to no English. Because of this I strive to make my classroom a safe place where students can be themselves and feel loved and supported. The school district I work in is the #1 most diverse school district in the entire United States and we are very proud of that diversity in our students.
My students are smart, funny, a little silly, and really love being at school.
I focus on making my classroom a fun, safe, and loving place to learn because many of my students go home to hard situations and may not have a lot of support at home. They love art projects, GoNoodle, and class STEM challenges. They also really love when I read aloud books to them, their favorite being "The Day the Crayons Quit". I love my students and want them to know that they are loved and that they matter.
My Project
Being in a low income school, most of my students eat all of their meals while at school which are provided to them through our Title 1 funding. Unfortunately our funding does not cover a midmorning recess snack. We start school very early and for my little 6 year old children, lunch can seem like a lifetime away.
My students start to get cranky and unfocused by recess time if they do not have anything to snack on.
Although I've sent many notes home to remind parents to pack snacks, many of them are unable financially to provide extra snacks for their children. I would greatly appreciate any help in keeping my first graders fed and focused so they can achieve their potential.
