This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In our school community, students face food insecurity, which directly impacts their ability to focus, engage, and excel in after-school tutoring. To address this issue, my high school students and I have launched an initiative to ensure that no student goes hungry during tutoring sessions. This project is not just about providing snacks; it’s about empowering students to take ownership of their well-being while fostering a supportive, focused learning environment. By offering snacks, students can stay awake, engaged, and ready to learn. The availability of snacks will also encourage them to remain in tutoring sessions longer, enhancing their academic success.
This initiative supports students participating in after-school tutoring throughout our high school.
Many of these students face economic challenges, and for some, nutritious snacks between school and tutoring sessions may be inaccessible. By offering snacks, we help improve the academic focus and well-being of students across our entire school, not just in individual classrooms. The effects of this initiative extend beyond academic performance, contributing to a culture of peer support and community. Though the focus is on high school students, the benefits reach our entire school community by creating a stronger, more engaged group of learners.
The requested materials—nutritious snacks—are essential for the success of this initiative. By providing healthy options, we ensure that students attending after-school tutoring sessions can maintain their energy and concentration. These snacks are not just a source of sustenance but also an opportunity for leadership. Students will manage the distribution of snacks, coordinate among their peers, and take ownership of the program. This gives them the chance to develop organizational and leadership skills, building a sense of responsibility and pride in helping their fellow students succeed.
