This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come from an area where our school has over 90% that meet or are below the poverty level. They come in many times hungry (we have free breakfast here, but not always what they like). Students can get breakfast, but when late they just want to get to class right away and skip breakfast.

Many times a student will ask if they can take home their snacks to have something to eat later on, or to share with a sibling.

Many times the only meals they get are school meals. These kids eat fairly early in the day so by 1:00 they are hungry and we seem to have a hard time getting parents to donate snacks. However, if they are having a hard time as is feeding their families, I know contributing to the classroom is impossible for them to do.

I bring some things when I can, but as a teacher and with my own family to feed, it can be difficult.

Not only does this feed my kids, but also kids from previous years. There are times they will come by to see if I have snacks as they didn't eat lunch because they didn't like it, or it wasn't enough. Sometimes they have after school things going on and won't get to eat till much later in the day.

Not only will you be helping my class, but many students.
