Help me give my students snacks to keep their bellies from grumbling and gurgling.

I believe every child deserves the opportunity for an excellent education, and I am proud to partner with my school, other educators, families, and community leaders to strive toward this goal. I teach in a high-poverty school zone in which 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. These amazing students need additional support because most of them come from low-income, single-family households, a majority of which have little to no support or resources. Despite some of the challenges they face in and around their environment, every year my students come to school excited, full of life, and eager to learn.
As the 2016 and 2019 Teacher of the Year, as well as alumni of Metro Atlanta, Teach for America, I choose to continue to significantly impact the life trajectories of students in our region’s high-need communities.
With everything that is going on and the continuing COVID crisis, I have been trying to give my students treats when they come to school, so they have something fun to look forward to the day. Due to COVID, there is limited availability in our school for snacks once lunch has ended, and when we are in school many kids are staying after to work with teachers or for after-school events.
Having these snacks will help students make it through the day, improve their social and emotional learning, keep their focus and engagement.
My students will be able to enjoy a healthy snack while conversing about things of their interest. This will give them the opportunity to develop relationships and social skills that can last a lifetime. I want to bring my students together with snack moments to create a feeling of warmth and belonging.
