I teach at a Title 1 school and I'm trying to make a positive difference in the lives of my students.
On the first day of school, my students were given an "About Me" paper that included the question "How can I help you while you're in my class?" Many of them responded with one word- food.
I have decided to start a compliment jar as a way for students to get snacks. The way it will work is a student may get a snack but they have to "pay" for it. The way they "pay" for it is to pull a name out of the compliment jar. The name is of another student in the class and they have to write a compliment to that classmate. They do not have to put their name on it if they do not want to. I will collect the compliment, look it over, and then they are free to choose their snack. At the end of the week, the students are given the compliments that were written about them.
I did this in my previous high school classroom and was very successful- almost every student used it at least twice a week. It gives the students such a confidence boost and I love seeing the smiles on their faces as they read what their classmates wrote about them!
I feel that these snacks will help continue to foster a positive classroom environment while giving hungry students the opportunity to have food.
