My Students

At our low-income, high-poverty school, I can experience first hand the impact of the arts on kids. We try to give our students the experience of music education. Currently, we offer general music and band.

Occasionally, our students will have sung in the choir at church or have learned to rap through friends and family, but only a few have touched a musical instrument.

Our school is unique, a small school in the heart of the Bronx. We serve from 6th to 12th grades.

They are vibrant students who are eager to learn and to experience the world. I am hoping to continue encouraging our scholars to be creative in a positive manner and help develop their love of the arts.

My Project

My after school band students are amazing students who work hard every day in my after school band. The sad truth, though, is that many of them don't eat well at home and come to school hungry or skip lunch to get work done, and therefore can't concentrate as well as they could on their lessons. They know, however, that they can rely on me to bring out some healthy snacks to get them over that growling stomach for band.

Granola bars, chips and other healthy snacks are just what my students need to get them through the day.

I have a well-stocked "bodega" in my office for students in need to take home meals and hygiene products, but providing them with quick, in-class snacks can't be overlooked either. I've provided them with a lot of these items, but we're running quite low at this point in the year and we could really use your help to re-stock.

Giving them a quick snack makes a world of difference for their concentration and work output. They're a great pick-me-up for late morning or late afternoon, and I love being able to help my students out with them. Please help me help my students with something to tide them over to the end of the day!
