This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from one of the poor school districts in the South Bronx located nearby the Bronx Zoo in a gang territory. The school is housed in a old warehouse building. This is a new school for me after my 5 years at my previous high school. I moved on after my Seniors graduated.
I have only been at the school three months and I have worked very hard to get to know my new students.
Many of them have been impacted by the pandemic and suffered losses of family members. There is a lot of economic, housing, food insecurity etc. and in spite of it all the students still come to school to try their best to complete their education with the hopes of
For many of my students, they will be the first one in their family to be on their way to successfully complete high school. For some of them they will be the first ones to graduate high school in their family.
My Project
I have observed that many students do not eat breakfast and when they come to school, they tend to head straight for the breakfast area which is set up by the cafeteria staff. It is always a carry meal such as cereal, milk and fruit. Its not much but something is better than nothing. Midway through the day you can always hear students ask if a staff member has any snacks or water. I know there is a need and when I worked at my last school I provided snacks to the students which always helped them get through the day.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
