The moment they saw the grow lights, soil, and planting trays, their excitement filled the room. They immediately began planting seeds and planning experiments to see how different conditions would affect growth. For many, this was the first time they truly felt like scientists.\r\n\r\nWith these materials, our classroom has become a place of discovery. Students are tracking plant growth, sharing results, and making real connections to genetics and environmental adaptation. Even those who often struggle with reading or written work are engaged because they can see and touch the science happening in front of them.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my students are not only learning biology; they are gaining confidence, curiosity, and a love of science that will last well beyond this project.","fullyFundedDate":1734755810632,"projectUrl":"project/exploring-genetics-and-growth-fast-plan/8995977/","projectTitle":"Exploring Genetics and Growth: Fast Plants in Action!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rosa","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8638957"},{"teacherId":8638957,"projectId":8998095,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting this project! By adding Manga to our classroom library, you've helped create a more inclusive space where struggling readers, including students with disabilities, feel empowered to engage with literature in new and exciting ways. For many of my students, traditional books can be overwhelming—dense text, limited visuals, and complex vocabulary often stand in the way of comprehension. Manga, with its compelling artwork and concise dialogue, has opened the door to reading for students who once found it intimidating.\r\n\r\nI've seen students who rarely pick up a book eagerly dive into Manga stories, decoding the visuals and following the plot with confidence. For learners with dyslexia, ADHD, or autism, the balance of images and text has made reading more approachable, allowing them to process information at their own pace. One student who previously avoided independent reading now proudly shares his favorite Manga series with classmates, sparking peer conversations and building a sense of community around reading.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has done more than just provide books; it has built confidence, fostered joy, and turned reluctant readers into eager participants. This project is helping students not only access literacy but also experience the sense of accomplishment and pride that comes with truly enjoying a story. Thank you for making this transformation possible.","fullyFundedDate":1736778584415,"projectUrl":"project/manga-magic-building-our-classroom-libr/8998095/","projectTitle":"Manga Magic: Building Our Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rosa","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8638957"},{"teacherId":8638957,"projectId":8966079,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting this project! With your generosity, my students were able to dive deeper into the fascinating world of bacteria and viruses. We explored bacteria as true living organisms, learning how their structures help them survive and interact with humans. At the same time, we examined viruses, which are not considered living organisms since they cannot reproduce on their own and must rely on a host. This comparison helped students think critically about how we define \"life\" in science.\r\n\r\nWhat made this project especially exciting was the chance for students to go beyond memorizing facts. They created hands-on models of both bacteria and viruses, investigated their impact on society, and then presented their findings to the class. Students who are usually shy were eager to explain what they learned, and others developed new confidence in speaking about scientific ideas. The project brought science to life in a way that was both engaging and meaningful.\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, my students not only expanded their knowledge but also became more curious about the world around them. They now see how microscopic organisms and infectious agents can shape health, technology, and daily life. You made it possible for them to experience biology in a deeper and more personal way, and for that we are truly grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1740327506955,"projectUrl":"project/lessons-that-grow-minds/8966079/","projectTitle":"Lessons That Grow Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rosa","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8638957"},{"teacherId":9373061,"projectId":8887835,"letterContent":"I wanted to extend my heartfelt thanks for your generous support in bringing new resources into our classroom. It's been a simple yet effective way to connect real-life examples to classroom lessons.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the GloFish, they were amazed by its bright color and immediately started asking questions about why it looks different from the others. Their curiosity opened the door to discussions about genetics and biotechnology.\r\n\r\nNext, we plan to extend our genetics unit by comparing traits in other organisms and introducing Punnett squares. My ENL class is a diverse group with different cultures and languages who all are just trying to learn English as a group. One thing that I will say about my class is that they are tightly bonded, and these materials only tightened that bond between them. Because the focus was on SEL (social-emotional learning), the majority of the materials were games that could be played as a group, something that excited them when they first saw it.\r\n\r\nMy students and I used these materials as a way to focus on speaking English, specifically on building their literacy skills through games. I'm glad at how engaging this was for my students, my students even chose to come to my classroom during their lunch break to continue playing the games. I found that learning while using activities creates a less stressful environment, especially when each of the students is capable of making mistakes without shame. Once again, thank you for helping my students with this experience and creating an engaging classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1728272944208,"projectUrl":"project/building-identity-through-the-eyes-of-en/8862048/","projectTitle":"Building Identity Through the Eyes of English Language Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Vargas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9795680"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_463","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":231,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":92,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":40,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":56,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"7.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":55.1,"schoolId":463,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Wings Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Wings Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/wings-academy/463"}
