Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a city that is thriving, but they don't always feel that they are part of that success or ability to access it. What they know is that they live in a neighborhood that is changing due to development and gentrification and that other parts of the city celebrate these changes while not acknowledging the impact it has on our students' lives in East Austin. Too often, these changes are pushing their friends and families out because of rising rent and home prices instead of giving them access to services and opportunities they were long denied.

My students live in a city of opportunity but are denied many of those opportunities every day.

My job as a special education science teacher is to make sure that they have the same opportunities in my classroom that students in West Austin have. My students work hard and they are eager to explore, discover and learn. They are over 90% economically disadvantaged and over 95% of them are members of minorities. I work hard to break the cycle of poverty and disadvantage and to teach them not only academics but self-advocacy and determination.

My Project

This project is a mix of further snacks and some environmental science supplies so that we can start growing veggies and other plants in the spring. We desperately need snacks for the kids, especially in the mid-afternoon and we have been buying these all year out of our paychecks. The kids truly get hungry. It's no joke. We also need fidget toys, fish food for our aquarium, pencils, and in-class rewards, especially for our special needs students. With the grow lights and seeds, we hope to be able to both run germination experience and to demonstrate starters for our spring vegetable garden.
