Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a self-contained Special Education classroom. My students have all been diagnosed with Autism and Speech Impairment. Our classroom focuses on teaching appropriate behaviors, social skills, and academic learning.
With most students being nonverbal, we use picture icons and very structured daily routines.
Each student has their own daily schedule with laminated and Velcro picture icons. This helps them transition more easily.
Our school is in a low income area with 70% of students receiving free or reduced price lunch. We recently received damage from Hurricane Harvey. All carpets and some parts of the walls had to be removed. This has affected my students since change is very difficult for many people with Autism.
My Project
These snacks will help motivate my students to work as well as keeping their bellies full. We have reinforcers for all students to work to earn, and edibles work really well for this!
Some students do not know when their next meal will be, so having snacks at school helps them feel more secure.
I am also asking for a kitchen play center and play food. All of my students have Autism, and several of them have food aversions. Having a kitchen play center with foods to play with during leisure time may help them with these aversions. The kitchen and the hands puppets will also help with social skills!
