I am a speech-language pathologist at an elementary school in East New York, Brooklyn. A neighborhood in which research has shown around 24% of the children live in poverty. I usually service anywhere from 35-50 students in 3-K through 5th grade, who all have an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
My students tend to have one or more disabilities (cognitive and/or physical); however, they are all excited to come to their speech sessions to learn and excel.
Many of them have challenges at school and beyond, but they come to their sessions willingly because we discuss their goals, the steps necessary for success and how we, as a team, will achieve success.
My Project
Most of my students come from low-income households. For some, the meals they have at school are the only ones they may have for the day. Hunger after school negatively impacts their ability to focus on homework and life in general.
My goal is to ensure that all of my students, in-person and remote, at least have something to eat and drink before they do their homework.
I plan to make care packages for my students, and others who I know are in great need of food for after school.
I know that snacks and juice are not a complete meal; however, I truly believe the products I have chosen would at least provide some semblance of sustenance for them after school. We look forward to your continued support and generosity.
