This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are 9th-12th graders in Long Beach, CA. The students I work with have diverse strengths, learning styles, and needs. They also come from many different economic backgrounds.
All of my students are working hard to graduate high school with a diploma and attend college, but they need a little support to help them achieve their goals.
Many of my students will be first-generation college students who are feeling very hopeful, but anxious, about their futures. I also have many students whose families struggle financially and who often come to school hungry. Having healthy snacks and treats available for them to take without judgment provides a way for them to feel seen and supported in a safe environment that is striving to meet their needs as they get ready to transition out of high school. It also creates trust between myself and my students, allowing them to build the confidence needed to share their challenges and advocate for themselves.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
