My Students
My students are some of the most amazing, determined, and resilient young people I’ve ever met. I’m inspired daily by their strength and drive to do and be better for themselves. They come from unique backgrounds and a variety of socio-economic situations. However, when they enter my classroom, they know that we are all working towards a common goal-to do everything we can to make the future as bright as possible. I want to give my students the strongest possible foundation for success.
In order to achieve this, I have to push my students to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and proficient readers.
I expect a lot from them, but I know they are more capable than they sometimes believe. As a teacher, I live for the “Aha!” moments when a difficult task suddenly makes sense and becomes easy.
My Project
If you've ever spent time with teenagers, you know they are ALWAYS hungry! This very sentiment is echoed through my classroom every year. I get asked if I have anything to eat on a daily basis and it breaks my heart to have to tell students no. It's hard to focus on anything else when you're hungry and counting down the minutes until lunch. It's also embarrassing to have an audible stomach-growl in front of peers!
Being able to provide my students with a small snack during the day will give them one less thing to have to worry about- and will shift their focus back to their assignments.
My students come from many different backgrounds- some of them simply do not have enough food at home. Childhood hunger should not be a hinderance to future success.
