My Students

I teach in a first grade inner city school in the Bronx, New York where most of my students are growing up in poverty. I teach in an integrated classroom, I have 12 special education students and 19 general education students in my class. My students are so unique that each one of them hold a special place in my heart. They come to school each day ready and excited to learn. Unfortunately most of students my students come hungry and don’t eat breakfast in the morning. The only meal that most of them will eat is lunch; lunch isn’t until 11:40am. Food fuels the brain and my students come in very hungry and sleepy from not having breakfast. I would love to provide each of my students with the opportunity to have a mid-morning snack, to keep them alert and eager to learn.

My Project

These snacks will help my students stay focused and on task for a morning full of reading, writing and math. It is important that my students are alert and ready to learn for the long morning that is ahead of them. Students who are hungry are less likely to stay focused and this could interfere with their learning. I want to give my students a snack that is healthy. I know a snack in the morning will help get them through the morning until lunch time. This would also put a smile on their face knowing that they don’t have to feel hungry in school, where they should be focused on learning.
