Snack for Success: Nourishing Minds, Fueling Futures

My Project

I teach at a high school that is designated as a Title One school, meaning a significant portion of our students come from low-income households. Many of these students do not have access to snacks during the school day, which can lead to hunger and difficulty concentrating on their studies. This lack of focus can negatively impact their academic performance and overall well-being.

To combat this issue, I have implemented a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) snack drawer in my classroom.

When I notice a student struggling to stay focused, I offer them a snack in exchange for their commitment to concentrate on their work. This strategy has proven to be highly effective; students receive the nourishment they need, which helps them regain their focus and improve their academic engagement. The simple act of providing a snack has made a significant difference in their ability to stay on task and succeed in their studies.

Moreover, my classroom has become a known safe haven for any student on campus who is hungry, regardless of whether they are in my class. Students from all around the school know they can come to my room for a snack without any questions asked. This initiative not only ensures that no student has to go through the school day hungry but also fosters a supportive and inclusive environment where students feel cared for and valued. By addressing their basic needs, we can help them achieve their full potential academically and personally.
