This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 32 energetic fourth graders in my New York City classroom. Many of the children come from low-economic households but they have big dreams. They understand the importance of a good education. Most of the students attend after school programs as well so they spend the majority of their day in school.
My students work both in homogeneous groups and in heterogeneous groups in order to accomplish their daily learning targets.
We not only focus our academic goals but on our social-emotional goals as well. We are involved with the Leader in Me program and practice our 7 Habits of Happy Kids. We understand that in order to be successful in school, we must always try our best. We motivate each other and work as a team.
My Project
My students start their school day at 8:00 a.m. and they have lunch at 12:30 p.m. so they could use a snack break in between. I allow them to eat a snack during their independent reading time. Unfortunately, only about 50% of the students bring a snack. For some families, it is a financial hardship.
My fourth graders will truly appreciate some yummy snacks such as Welch's Drinks, Healthy Snacks and Bars, and crackers, that will keep their tummies full until lunchtime.
They need their bodies and brains refueled so they can soak up all knowledge they possibly can. Having a stockpile of snacks available to the children will be helpful when a child comes in hungry. It will also give them the opportunity to practice sharing, learn about nutrition and making good choices.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
