This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school serves almost 400 New York City public school students. Ninety-four percent of the population are minority students. Eighty percent qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch. About 30% are students with disabilities and English Language Learners.

We are a school that specializes in business, promotes college and career readiness, offers year-round experiences that include many work related trips, workshops, business based competitions, work-based and service learning opportunities, mentoring, career counseling and internships for all our hard working students including those economically disadvantaged.

My students are hard-working and try to take every opportunity to succeed. It's hard to succeed when your stomach is growling and your mind is distracted by how you can hold out to the next meal. It's hard to compete when you haven't eaten. It's hard to compete when hungry.

Many of the students are living at or below the poverty line, whether at home or in temporary shelters. Families have no extra money for meals let alone that extra nutritional snack teenagers need between so they can get back on track.

A small snack bar in the classroom provides many benefits including improved academic performance, attendance, engagement, and reducing hunger and food insecurity.

My Project

Although my students are hard working they often lack monetary resources for breakfast. Often when fighting the struggles of the MTA just to get to school their meals are skipped and/or poor choices made. I want more for my students.

Providing a small snack bar in our classroom provides many benefits, including improving academic performance, attendance, engagement, and reducing hunger and food insecurity.

My students are too prideful to ask for an extra snack to tie them over till the next meal and it's heartbreaking to watch them fiddle around, put their head down and basically slow down because they are hungry. With having that welcoming snack bar, students know they can just get up, take a snack or two that they need and quickly get back to work. This has been a great addition to the classroom that improved attendance and learning. Unfortunately, our stock ran out and it’s time to replenish for their future.
