My Students

My fantastic students come from multiple backgrounds. Many are from single-parent households and hard-working low-income families. I am amazed at their resilience in spite of the many issues that interfere with their everyday safety, emotional wellbeing and security. They find a school to be a safe place that nourishes them and allows them to flourish. Each child has their own unique story that unfolds over the course of our school year together. They are learning and growing to beat the odds that seem to be always stacked against them. My students need more support than the average school-age child. This extra support allows them to overcome challenges many others do not have to face.

My Project

My students live with food insufficiency every day. Sometimes they’re late and miss the breakfast program through no fault of their own. Sometimes their nutrition is lacking and they need a boost to get through the afternoon. Sometimes their families do not have enough income to provide protein-rich meals. Having readily available healthy snacks can help to fulfill a basic need they all have to function successfully in the classroom. It is very hard to concentrate when your tummy is rumbling and you are hungry. I wan to create a classroom where everyone gets what they need, and sometimes what they need is a healthy snack to keep going.
