My Students

My students come from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds. Despite their differences, they share a common passion for the arts.

The mission of our school is to enrich students' learning by regularly infusing the visual and performing arts into our academic curriculum.

It is this that lights the fire within our students to want to come to school.

In a school where over half of the population is on free or reduced lunch and where many come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken, I am faced with the daily challenge of making low-level readers WANT to read. As a result, I yearn to make this a reality by showing them it CAN be fun and easy for them.

My Project

When asked their favorite subject, seldom do students scream out, "Reading!" Nevertheless, reading is an integral skill for students to learn, and it is my goal to make this learning path exciting for them.

Children respond to being rewarded.

As a result, I am seeking help in supplying my class treasure box with sweet treats and snacks they can earn as they learn to become better readers. These goodies will help to motivate my students to focus on their reading. Focus begets comprehension, and comprehension leads to learning. My students are fabulous -- they deserve to be honored for their achievement!
