Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a wonderful mix of different ethnicities and religious affiliations. Most are economically disadvantaged. A large group of students are immigrants from Bosnia, Africa, and the Carribbean islands. Another large group of students are inner-city youth who are of African-American or Latino descent. I love my students because they are compassionate, tolerant of each other's differences, and embrace people from all walks of life. I wish I went to a high school with this much diversity and acceptance in the student body.
Many students want to become doctors, engineers, or become first-time college attendees in their families.
My Project
At this STEM Conference, 8-10 STEM professionals will serve as panelists, answering questions and networking with high school students aspiring to work in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. I hope this conference will give all students a network of STEM professionals to go to when they want to create careers in STEM for themselves. The major STEM areas of focus are medicine, engineering, and careers using statistical analysis.
The conference is a full-day event including a panel discussion, following by a catered luncheon.
Seven high school juniors and seniors will present their medical research over Summer 2018, and students will learn about new internship opportunities at CCMC and Jackson Laboratories for Summer 2019.
Although the cost is high, students, staff, and community members were thrilled with the first conference. I hope to make our 2nd conference even better by adding STEM tote bags, STEM Conference T-shirts, and professionally made STEM Conference Folders including pens, note-pads, and printed information about STEM careers for students to take with them. The goal is to make a long-lasting impact on these students through meaningful interaction with multiple STEM professionals.
