Help me give my students a hands-on experience where they will learn how to safely use a Bunsen burner and a very important and challenging chemistry concept, stoichiometry.

My Project
I have done this lab for years. I have found it is a great way to help students visualize a very hard concept and also expose students to a fun snack while also learning fire safety. Students in groups will be given various amounts of s'more ingredients.
They will use a balanced reaction for making a s'more (2 crackers + 1 marshmallow + 4 chocolate chips = 1 s'more) to calculate how many s'mores they should be able to make (theoretical yield), which ingredient (reactant) will limit their reaction (limiting reactant) and which is in excess.
They will then make the s'mores and find if their theoretical yield matches their actual yield. Later in the lab they will be given the mass of each reactant and do further stoichiometry (math) to solve for various quantities. This will later translate into actual chemical reactions and equations.
These lab supplies will support my 4 sections and my colleges 6 sections of 9th grade chemistry (which is right around 300 students from an urban historically Black college prep public high school). I ordered Halal marshmallows because normally I either forget or they are more expensive and I do not get them for our students who cannot or choose to not consume animal products. I love that this way all students can participate in the lab. It is so fun to see students for the first time making s'mores and students who have helping their peers. I hope to do this lab right before winter break. Thank you so much for your support!
