This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In preparation for next school year, fifth grade is the last elementary school grade before the huge transition to middle school, where students will be transitioning from class to class, up to seven times. My colleague and I work on giving our elementary students a feel for those transitions by pairing our two groups of fifth-grade students.

It is important to mentally and physically prepare our fifth graders for the huge change in learning they will encounter in middle school all the way to their college years: transitioning from class to class.

We each have a homeroom, but then also specialize in core subjects. I teach English language arts and history, and social studies, while she teaches math and science. We split the day between both classes, switching midway. Each student has a cubby in the homeroom classroom to hold their books and materials when needed. When transitioning to the "switch class," students need to take certain materials with them from their homeroom, like their binders, Chromebooks, and pencil pouches, to study and work with in their switch class. Holding these materials in their hands has been a problem as they, at times, end up dropping their materials, such as their Chromebooks. Their backpacks are too big and bulky for our elementary school classroom and hang on their outside hooks holding their lunch and such. Cue the sturdy canvas bags! These canvas bags are perfect for holding the materials the students need when transitioning between classrooms. They fit perfectly inside the desk space that students use while in their switch class. No more dropping of materials while transitioning. Thank you in advance for helping us give our students an organized "taste" of transitioning from class to class, as they will begin to experience in middle school
