This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a school librarian. The best part of my week = story time for the munchkins in grades K through 2. But I'm running out of fun, colorfully illustrated books to read to them!
Our school has around 300 kids in grades K through 2.
They come to the library, two classes at a time, to hear stories on Thursdays and Fridays. I read books to the kids, who often act out the stories. A great time is had by all! Before I go on, a word or two about our school. It is located in South Florida. Most of the kids come from low income households. Also, most speak a language other than English at home. Their parents tend to be recent immigrants, with poorly paid jobs in the local tourism industry.
My Project
Before the kids come for story time on Thursdays and Fridays, I ask my seventh grade helpers to search the shelves for some lively books with great pictures. I'm noticing, however, that the seventh graders are pulling the same books every week. We're running out of really good story books for the munchkins. We obviously need more. Which books should we get? Most of the books that I have selected here are by Jan Brett. She writes great story books and fills them with intricate, beautiful illustrations that are stories unto themselves. They mesmerize the kids. Please run a Google images search for Jan Brett, and you'll see just what I mean.
And that's our project!
We really need story books for our most important patrons (the munchkins!), and I'm asking for books by an author (and amazing illustrator) who is tried and trusted. Won't you please help to keep story time fun?
