My sixth and eighth graders are full of energy, excited to learn, and naturally inquisitive. They want to be engaged in the lessons, instead of being passive learners. The days of sitting at a desk listening to a lecture are in the past! Students need to know why it is important for them to learn the material taught, and when they will use it in real life.
With STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), Problem-Based Learning (PBL), and Computer Science (coding) students are engaged, and solving both real-life and fictional problems.
My school has over 900 diverse students coming from different socioeconomic statuses. I have set my standards high for my students knowing they are the engineers, scientists, health care workers, problem solvers, and innovators of our future. They are eager to learn, invent, design, problem solve, and eager to change the world!
My Project
Remember the old Polaroid cameras when you could get your photos in an instant? The Instax cameras are the new Polaroid cameras. My students have requested these cameras to help them create a STEAM portfolio. While most of education today is digital, being able to show their own creativity and evidence will help my students take ownership of their own learning.
Student leadership projects will allow students to both promote and share ways in which they have shined as leaders and role models throughout the year.
The cameras and film will also help provide students with physical evidence to reinforce their argumentation, as they continue the cycle of inquiry.
