This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My drama students are creative members of our community who aren't afraid to express themselves through theatre arts. They use drama to tell stories and reenact important events such as the testimonials by high school students at Ground Zero on 9/11, or acting out their original scenes for a No One Eats Alone assembly for the school showing inclusivity among all students.
My drama students are unbelievably brave.
They begin drama not really knowing what they are capable of but in a matter of minutes, they begin to realize they are funny, courageous, deep, talented, capable, skilled, artistic, and smart. They love creating scenes, acting out improv scenarios, and writing monologues that are deep and thought provoking. Their curiosity and passion about bringing issues in our community to light through drama are both important and necessary. These students participate in an anti-bullying skits, write scenes about mental health and perform them for parents and faculty. They demonstrate their range of skills on stage as well as in the classroom, and for some students who struggle with literacy, this drama program is where they can shine and perform on a level playing field.
My Project
The Poloroid Snap instant camera will allow students to run their own fundraisers in order to earn money for future scripts, props, and costumes. They will exchange character snaps and post pics of shows or rehearsals as well as friend photos.
Students will create characters by dressing up with costume pieces and using props that will be captured on film that students can carry away or share with friends.
As students share their photos, word will also get out about our drama program and how much fun performing is! Students will hopefully be intrigued and want to sign up next year. Drama provides a safe place for student expression.
