SMART ROOM: Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment
Help me give my students a SMART: Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment room. Having a place for students to address their lagging skills in somatic regulation can help their interoception awareness.

My Project
This year, our school has one small space to convert into a SMART ROOM. We know that access to various sensory experiences will benefit our students immensely. We want this room to become a safe place for students with multiple needs, such as somatic regulation or sensory processing, and a place to go when they need to feel calm or stimulate their senses to connect and attune with others. Each student will use a sensory room in a way that benefits them the most. We want our sensory rooms to contain different activities that engage all five senses and teach interception skills.
One must ask: How can our students be more productive, joyful, and loving?
And the answer to that is that we need to start paying attention to our sensory needs. We need to allow students to explore the fun side of their sensory health and enable them to integrate sensory-informed living. We need our students to become the detective of their sensory preferences and master how they feel within their bodies because how an individual feels changes everything. It can only happen if we get funding for our SMART room.
We learned about the school's five senses: vision, taste, touch, smell, and sound, but there is also our sense of equilibrium. Therefore schools need to have opportunities for sensory learning in their school curriculum.
A teacher might use sensory objects or other materials to help students learn a new concept or help regulate their arousal state of being.
Sensory learning can be particularly effective for students with learning disabilities or other challenges, as it can provide multiple ways for them to access and understand new information about their emotion and body.
