Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at the tip of Texas, bordering Mexico, where my students speak Spanglish. They face many challenges such as dyslexia, special needs, and socioeconomic disadvantages, but that doesn't stop them from dreaming big. They are determined, hard-working children who are willing to learn no matter their circumstances.
I teach second-grade bilingual students who inspire me on a daily basis.
These students come every day excited to start class. They enjoy hands-on activities, crafts, group activities, and, especially, working with technology. They face many challenges, but they don't let these challenges take over their learning experience.
I work at a very supportive school where students come first. We are all about meeting our children's needs. Our administrators have created a safe, happy environment for everyone at our school: students, staff, teachers, and parents. I love working at the very tip of Texas where my students are very unique and wonderful.
My Project
My students are becoming problem solvers by designing and 3D printing devices that will help our everyday lives. With the keyboard for the iPad Pro, students will have to use math skills such as area, perimeter and volume to design a helpful 3D device for their class pet, a guinea pig. They will also have to identify the pet’s needs and its habitat to make sure it is the best device for it.
All things created will be placed on their bi-weekly auction where students apply their savings and spending skills learned through our financial literacy lessons.
I believe in empowering students with their own learning. Letting them be creative and find their passion is my main goal as a teacher. My students are already becoming engineers at age seven, by building various things with our previously donated 3D printer. I want them to open up their imagination even more with everything I can, to introduce them to this technological, engineered world.
