Smart Farming with Arduino: Automating Plant Care in Agriculture

Help me give my students a class set of Arduino-compatible microcontroller boards and components to create hands-on computer science projects that connect coding with the physical world, fostering skills with practical applications in agriculture and technology.

My Project

My students are passionate learners with a deep curiosity for both technology and agriculture. They thrive on hands-on experiences that connect their classroom knowledge to the real world. As students at an urban agriculture high school, they bring a unique perspective to problem-solving, blending innovative ideas with a commitment to sustainability and food production.

The resources I’m requesting—Arduino-compatible boards, soil moisture sensors, relays, and pumps—will empower my students to design and build automated plant-watering systems.

These projects will not only teach them foundational computer science concepts, such as coding and working with sensors but also help them see the practical application of technology in agriculture. By learning to monitor soil moisture and control water flow through automated pumps, they’ll gain skills that are directly relevant to modern, sustainable farming practices.

My goal for this project is to spark my students’ interest in computer science while reinforcing their knowledge of agricultural systems. I want them to see the endless possibilities of integrating technology into agriculture, giving them a competitive edge in future careers. These tools will make learning interactive and engaging, providing them with a tangible way to connect coding, data analysis, and engineering with their agricultural studies.

What makes my students truly special is their ability to tackle real-world challenges with creativity and determination. They are not afraid to get their hands dirty—whether it’s planting seeds in the school greenhouse or debugging lines of code in a programming project. This project will give them the opportunity to grow their skills and confidence as they create meaningful solutions that connect technology and agriculture.
