Do you remember the first time you got a lap top? A smart phone? A tablet? In a world of fast-moving technology, we have more access to machines that help us learn better - like a Smart Board. However, my students are not able to take advantage of this technology because we do not have one - yet!
My students are loving, hard-working kindergarteners from the great state of Texas.
Most of them are English Language Learners and they are working hard to be independent readers by the end of the year. We are proud to be part of a charter school network that serves primarily low-income families.
My Project
With a Smart Board, students will use programs that help them blend words in order to become better readers. Students will use the Smart Board to build critical thinking skills by solving word problems and playing strategy games . Students will also be able to use the board during independent work time by using games and apps that are created specifically for the Smart Board. These games will build letter-sound fluency and number sense.
Virtually all affluent schools have Smart Boards as part of their toolkit to ensure that their students learn to the best of their ability.
My students are already on the other side of the opportunity gap - where research has shown us that their low economic status already puts them at a disadvantage. This Smart Board would give my kindergarteners a boost in ensuring that all of them will learn and build their way to a higher education.
