My students need art supplies such as markers, paper, pencils, watercolors, and more to do many left brain as well as right brain art activities. This helps develop many necessary skills related to the learning process.
Most children are excited about doing a creative activity, while others rush through a project or are quick to complain, saying they can't draw. There are many children that doodle while listening to directions instead of attentively keeping eye contact. Art can develop both sides of the brain.
My class of bright and highly skilled students are very expressive.
Some love writing, while others love reading, drawing or singing. They are a very caring group of students who love to share ideas and work together on games and projects. They also love presenting the information they know to peers and parent audiences.
My Project
Drawing from life, also known as life drawing, requires that students make a mental shift from the left brain to the right brain, with an ability to see the big picture first, jump from one task to another. Exercises such as pure contour drawing, negative space, and upside-down drawing, can all help the students make the shift from left to right. Performing these exercises over a period of time and repeating them prior to each drawing session allows the students to "draw on the right side of the brain." Students will use watercolors, charcoals, and oil pastels to create projects using the "whole brain."
Through art projects, students will develop their fine motor skills (handwriting), develop attention to detail and focus, learn process, order and completion, increase their time on task, develop their visual-spatial organization skills, and develop an expanded image vocabulary.
Students will have more persistence and follow through and the added benefits of developing patience, increased self esteem and confidence.
