Ms. Schultz from Madison WI is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Smaller Budgets, Larger Class Sizes

My students need consumable supplies in order to enjoy some their favorite literacy and math activities. Supplies like stamp pads and wikki stix will support learning.

My Students

These are tough times for state governments. Huge deficits loom almost everywhere, and Wisconsin Public Schools are no exception. As budgets squeeze and classrooms grow in size, the students in my classroom have more needs and less engaging supplies to support their daily learning needs.

There are 24 adorable smiling faces coming through my classroom doors every day.

They are all part of a dual language immersion program designed to support learning in Spanish and English. Our school has 76% of students at or below poverty levels. Of our student population 68% of the students are English Language Learners. Our school is a K-2 school with 513 students. Last year the school only had 427 students. With enrollment up almost 100 students in comparison to last year, the need to find support from external sources rises. They come to school ready to learn, inspired to be the best citizens that they can be. They want to reach their full potential despite their daily battle with exhaustion, hunger, heat, cold, etc. Their families are very generous and extremely supportive and are confident that their children will have more success because of the educational opportunities that they receive every day at our school and in my classroom.

My Project

In order to ensure that every student reaches their full potential, I provide them with reading and writing work that meets their personal needs and is designed to build on their strengths and develop their weaknesses. Doing this requires extra supplies and engaging materials. The sleeves and envelops are used to house their daily work in folders, (as our school has cut the budget for laminating) this allows me to use and re-use the materials, the gel boards, white boards, stamp pads, stamps, dice, magnetic boards, and wikki sticks all provide a variety of fun, engaging and new enriching ways for students to explore reading and writing at their own level. Have a variety of supplies supports their engagement and enrichment for experiences a variety of new and fun materials that they may or may not have ever used or seen before. They also provide new ways of practicing important skills such as writing and reading words. However, doing these skills on something new is more exciting.

Not only will funding this project support the students as they learn, provide materials that are otherwise unavailable and inaccessible to the students, it will also demonstrate their importance.

Having access to fun, nice and exciting materials that can meet the various needs of 24 different students without boring the highest level students and still supporting the struggle for the lowest students is not easy. These materials provide this opportunity plus a sense of value and excitement.
