I remember my first day as a new teacher. I had four grades to teach, one elective that was chosen for me, and an academic intervention hour. Anyone who has taught before can see that and say that that was a daunting task. I’m not going to lie to you, it definitely was. But I will treasure that experience for the rest of my life. Because it is that experience that I continue to have that I have been given the opportunity to watch my students grow into the passionate and driven young men and women that they all are.
Many of the students that I currently serve and have served have not had many opportunities to explore and experience new opportunities.
We are a low-achievement school, but our kids have a strong passion for learning. The students that I see in my classroom are from low socioeconomic households. The school that I teach in serves five surrounding communities as well as our own. I have worked with these students for 3 ½ years now and have seen 3 classes graduate.
My Project
One of the most popular classes that I have the privilege to teach is my Storytelling class. This class was originally called Novels and Film. I chose to change the name because the students in the class explore how storytelling has evolved from cave painting to the robust films we have today.
My hope with this new equipment such as a video camera and green screen lighting kit ,is to give students the opportunity to create and share their own stories through film.
The class has evolved to students taking it more than once just to have the chance to explore film more in-depth. With this equipment, I foresee expanding the course into different media based electives that give students the hands-on experience of film-making and production.
