This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school community is vibrant and lively. We serve different types of learners and children with various home dynamics. School should be a safe place for students to learn academic, social, and emotional skills. With younger children, it is often difficult navigate big feelings such as anger, frustration, and embarrassment. Students need tools and strategies that are age appropriate. As a classroom teacher, it is always great to have additional tools to help support social and emotional development.
Through this project, I hope to acquire different types of tools to support my students as they navigate their big feelings.
Using a plethora of visual tools-such as bilingual visuals with emotions, sensory techniques, a weighted puppy, wobble chair, and fidgets-I hope to create a designated calming space in the classroom that supports and fosters emotional regulation and personal growth for all students. I plan to teach students how to use these tools and make them available in our classroom cozy corner. Students often need help being able to regulate their feelings. These tools would also prove most beneficial to the students I have with emotional dysregulation, autism, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, among others.
Additionally, I would use the the headsets for students with noise sensitivities to feel comfortable and included at school assemblies when the music and clapping proves too loud. The chair bands would help students needing to release the extra wiggles while also being able to complete their school work at their seat. The books on autism would foster greater understanding of our student population. The chews would help those students that tend to use their shirt sleeves and shirts to self-soothe. These tools would be an asset to promote inclusion and care for all of my students, especially those students with special needs.
